The White House
The White House has a rich history that includes the selection of its site, its construction, and the many changes made to it over the years:
- Site selection: In 1791, George Washington chose the site for the White House on the Potomac River.
- Construction: Construction began in 1792 with the laying of the cornerstone. The White House was designed by Irish architect James Hoban and built by enslaved and free African-American laborers, as well as immigrants.
- First residents: President John Adams and his wife Abigail became the first residents of the White House in 1800.
